About Sebastian Templ
Sebastian...
...the scientist
One of my greatest passions has always been to deeply understand the world around us, which led me to become a physicist.
Over my scientific career I've always found myself working at the intersection of microscopic and macroscopic phenomena, fascinated by the profound connections between these seemingly disparate realms.
I've been increasingly focusing on the broad subfields of astro-particle physics, statistical data analysis, and simulation. I've pursued these interests by collaborating with various particle physics research institutions, including CERN (Switzerland), GSI (Germany), and LNGS (Italy), as well as institutes of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
I earned my PhD from TU Wien, Austria, in 2021 for my work on a statistical data analysis search for a class of hypothesized particles in the CMS detector at the CERN–LHC.
...the data scientist
I am fascinated by the process of interpreting data and generating insights.
Since 2014, I've worked with a wide range of data, applying everything from traditional statistical methods and classical machine-learning to modern AI techniques and numerical simulations. My experience spans from processing simple toy datasets to working with real-world, petabyte-scale data in high-performance computing clusters.
...the software developer
I am energized by the opportunity to shape a project from its initial prototyping to its final phase. I've had the pleasure of doing this in both academic and private sector settings — from developing full-fledged data analysis projects to building production-ready backend libraries for software products.
While I enjoy the exploratory phase of prototyping, I also pride myself on delivering well-structured, well-documented, and well-tested code. I am also enthusiastic about establishing efficient development processes and being part of well-functioning teams that take ownership of their work.
...the reader
I am a passionate reader and strive to read widely, believing it is essential for challenging preconceptions and broadening one's perspective. I apply this approach to both fiction and non-fiction, and over the past cople of years, I've averaged 1–2 books per week.
This commitment to reading has significantly influenced my personal growth and the way I think about the world.
...the musician
For more than a decade, I was a dedicated musician, playing drums, percussion, and piano. My academic pursuits as a physicist eventually took precedence, but not before I had the pleasure of performing with a diverse range of talented musicians in small bands and ensembles, big bands, and orchestras, exploring genres from rock to indie to electronic to classical music to jazz.
In 2010, I passed the final examination (Audit of Arts) on drums & percussion with distinction.
...the contemplative
To use my time efficiently and meaningfully, I regularly take a step back for quiet solitude. While I cherish intellectual curiosity and time spent with trusted people, I also need moments to wind down and sort my thoughts.
I believe I know who I am only because I regularly spend time with my own thoughts. In a world of constant connection, this act of "going offline" feels like a rebellious and necessary act.
Sebastian, ...just Sebastian
These different facets shape who I am, though I'm more than any single role or interest. As I continue to grow, some aspects will evolve while new ones emerge.
What ties them all together is a curiosity about the world and a commitment to doing meaningful work — whether that's analyzing data, writing code, or simply taking time to learn or reflect.
